Spearos prepare for SA champs

All diving is done from a boat and there will be a minimum of two divers and a driver per boat.

Four intrepid spearfishermen from the Hibiscus Underwater Club will be taking part in the South African champs this year.

They are Don Solomon, his son Kyle, Kurt Bunge with Jonathan Guier as driver.

The four will represent Southern KZN at the champs to be hosted by Algoa UC and held in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), between April 8 and 13.
Three zones will be dived, one per day.

Kurt explained that each fisherman is allowed one fish per species, all species score, one point along with the weight of that species – this added together will achieve a final score per athlete.

“It is not the biggest fish that wins the day but rather who can outwit the smartest fish and accumulate the most points,” he said.

The diving will take place from the white water zone to greater depths (depending on how adventurous one is) all in search of a ‘special’ fish.

As with all spearfishing competitions, it is essential that the teams and fishermen know and understand the area.

It means that teams usually spend three or even four weeks in the area in preparation.

A fundraiser was held recently on the Bunge farm, where some fishing fun was enjoyed by all.
The club and team thanked all those who have supported them to this point, including local businesses for their sponsorships.
