Skzn snatch defeat from jaws of victory

It was a bitter pill for the team to swallow, but that's sport.

Irish rock band U2 is famous for many songs, none more so than Sunday, Blood Sunday.
In some ways, this was the case for the Southern KZN golf team trying to defend their Interzone title on home soil at Southbroom Golf Club.

After being so dominant for two days, it all fell apart on a disastrous Sunday. If it had been an actual war or fight, there would have been much blood let.

Fortunately, it was only a golf tournament, one which ranks high in camaraderie, and despite the disappointment of not winning, the mood was still upbeat. Well, eventually.

For the record, Skzn won the two strokeplay rounds on Friday, with arch-rival Ilembe second in both rounds.
Gavin Sole won the individual strokeplay on 66 and 72. He would go on to be the tournament’s most valuable player.

Then, in the matchplay on Saturday, Skzn beat Northern KZN 5-3, East Griqualand 8-0 and Zululand 5-3.
Skzn looked unstoppable, especially considering Ilembe had squeezed out a half with Zululand and narrowly defeated Northern KZN.

It meant that, at worst, a half with Ilembe and a win over Skzn B would secure the trophy.
It was not to be.

They collapsed against Ilembe, losing 7-1. To rub salt into the wounds, they almost lost to their B team, ending up 4-4.
It meant Ilembe sneaked past and snatched the trophy from under their noses.

Skzn was represented by Gavin Sole, Robert Mavundla, Jean-Marc Bouic, Chris Zietsman, Jan McDermott, Graham Sole, Koos Jacobs and Cameron Olivant.

The B team comprised Nic Crossman, Cyprian Xolo, Grant Richards, Elvis Khawula, Kirk Larsen, Adrian van Vuuren, Steve Swain and Jacques Kirstein.

There was a silver lining at the end of it all, with Koos Jacobs being selected for the KZN team to play in the SACD at Heron Banks in May.

Kokstad will host the tournament next year.

Gavin Sole stripes another tee shot down the middle.
