Southbroom champions defend titles

The tournament was played in hot conditions.

There were no real surprises at this year’s edition of the Southbroom Golf Club strokeplay championships, with defending champions Gavin Sole and Lindsay Owen comfortably defending their titles.

Gavin shot 71 and 68 on a hot weekend to notch up 13 in a row and 15 overall.
Veteran Glyn Forman was second on 75 and 72, with Cyprian Xolo (76 78) and Cameron Olivant (75 79) tied for third.

The B division was quite exciting, with Werner Duggan (87 87) winning in a playoff over Jack van den Eijkel (84 90).
Third place went to Det Wichmann (85 91).
Overall nett: Brian Jolliffe 70 75, Martin Hutton 75 73.
Saturday nett: Jack Moulder 71, Nicolas Crossman 73.
Sunday nett: Stefan le Roux 70, Ross Kupisiewicz 75, oco Simon Shusha.

C division honours went to youngster Braden Pratt on scores of 30 and 36.
Runner-up was Malcolm Moorley on 38 and 28, with Gary Brackley in third place on 30 and 35.
Best Saturday: Gerald FitzGerald 33, Keith Bailey 30.
Best Sunday: Russell Mackenzie 31, Andrew Leckie 29.

In the ladies’ section, Lindsay shot 83 and 75 to win her sixth title. She’s been playing golf at Southbroom since she was a young girl and simply loves the course.

Runner-up was Irene Schanda on 84 and 86, followed by past champion Heather Anderson on 91 and 84.
Bronze winner was Gjertrud Kok on 89 and 96, followed by Sue Kupisiewicz on 93 and 94. In third was Jenny Brewis on 89 and 98.

Overall nett: Augustine D’Ewes 143, Louise Leal 155.
Best nett Saturday: Arlene Bailey 73. Best nett Sunday: Shirley Jeffery 71.

Copper winner was stalwart Jeanette Peyios, coming back strongly on Sunday, with scores of 29 and 35.
Runner-up was Sharon Turnbull-Jackson on 28 and 33, followed by Cynthia Daniels on 27 and 32.
Best Saturday: Val Volck 25. Best Sunday: Sandy FitzGerald 34.
