Tennis vet set for world masters champs

Raj Naganna said he is hoping to win his singles match.

Raj Naganna, a member of the Umtentweni Tennis Club, is all set to compete in the World Masters Championships in Manavgat, Türkiye in March.

Raj has been playing tennis since 2014 and has won several titles in the South African 75 years and older category.
The World Masters Championships will take place from March 10 to 15, followed by the World Individual Championships from March 16 to 23.

This is not Raj’s first time representing South Africa overseas, as he participated in Florida in 2016 and Croatia in 2017.

Raj is thrilled to play outside the country again, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, and is looking forward to challenging himself while competing with world champions.

“It’s always been a wonderful experience to play at the champs, especially on clay courts. I’m looking forward to it and hope to win my singles match. I’ve put in a lot of hard work and have been training almost every day,” said Raj.

He expressed his appreciation to the South Coast community and members of his club for their continuous support throughout his journey and competitions. He said that last year he was selected to play in Spain, but did not attend because South Africa couldn’t make up a team in his age category.

“It was disappointing that I couldn’t go because I was looking forward to meeting Rafael Nadal, a Spanish professional tennis player, ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals.”
Travelling overseas can be costly, and Raj is seeking support from the community to cover his expenses.
