Runners brave heat for popular marathon

Hundreds of participants were part of the event.

Some 700 runners from 92 clubs braved the heat for this year’s Scottburgh Athletic Club‘s Half-Marathon and 10km event recently.

The event was a huge success with compliments from many runners about the ice cold water and ice provided en-route until the last water station.

There were 12 refreshment stations because of the heat, and local companies sponsored the cold drinks, cups and extras such as sweets for the race. Some people armed with water guns and spray bottles kept everyone cool.

The scenic marathon route began in Scottburgh and went all the way to Umkomaas and back.

The runners voted for the most festive refreshment station which was won by Suzuki Hampsons for the second year in a row. There was also a prize for the club with the most entries which went to Amanzimtoti Athletic Club.

They received a voucher sponsored by The Bell Restaurant and Enzos respectively. There were also numerous lucky draw prizes.

The 10km, which included the KZN Athletics Champs, started at 05:30 with some top runners in the province competing. The half marathon started at 05:35, also with some top runners.

In the men’s 10km open, Bongelani Mkhwanazi was first in a time of 30:15. First for the women was Tayla Kavanagh in 35:04. In the 21.1km men’s open, Zukile Vellem was first in 1:13:37.

It was an enjoyable race for all.
