All too easy for Big Fish

The threatened storms stayed away, thankfully, and a fabulous day's golf was enjoyed.

On a steamy day, where heavy clouds hung about and the humidity was oppressive (especially in the morning) Gavin Sole won the Southern KZN Closed golf tournament for the umpteenth time.
Actually, he has no idea how many times he’s won it.

He made absolutely sure none of the whipper-snapping pretenders got anywhere close, shooting 67 and 69 to win by 11 shots.

With barely a breath of wind, it was a day for scoring, despite the heavy conditions thanks to all the rain (and then some more rain) the club has had this season.

The Big Fish had 67 in the morning and 69 in the afternoon, making the most of a newfound draw he has discovered. Or is that just his playing partners’ lack of visual clarity?
Jokes aside, he was rock-solid as always, on a course he loves.

Runner-up was Robert Mavundla (Southbroom) on scores of 72 and 75. It’s his second successive runner-up finish, same spot as the Southern KZN Open at Margate in November last year.
Koos Jacobs (Umdoni Park) snuck into third spot with an afternoon 73 to go with a morning 76, counting out Graham Sole (Southbroom) who had 72 and 77.

Thabani Ngcungama (Port Shepstone) claimed fifth spot with 79 and an astonishing 72. He also won the nett prize by miles and he returned these scores off a nine handicap.
What’s remarkable is that, according to his score history on the Handicap Network Africa website, he has only broken 80 twice in his past two years.

Hopefully this will be the start of many more.

Cameron Olivant (Southbroom) was sixth on 78 and 76, followed one shot behind by Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom) and Cyprian Xolo (Southbroom).
Nett runner-up was Thulani Xolo on 80 and 78 off a seven handicap.
Vusie Maphumulo (Port Shepstone) produced a sterling round in the afternoon with 39 points to build on a steady start off 33 points to win the B division on 72 points.

Runner-up was Nathi Ndima (Port Shepstone) on 69 points, followed by Werner Duggan and Grantie Richards, both on 66 points.

Southern KZN golfers are now looking forward to the annual KZN Country Districts Interzone tournament, which will be played at Southbroom Golf Club from March 8 to 10.

Enjoying the day are (from left) Thulani Xolo (nett runner-up), Vusie Maphumulo (B division winner) and Thabani Ngcungama (nett winner).
