First junior win for Cameron

The youngster has produced some wonderful golf this holiday.

Cameron Olivant (14), who will be going into Grade 9 at Southcity Christian School this year (and not Grade 7 as previously erroneously reported!) has clinched his first official win on the U19 KwaZulu-Natal junior golf circuit.

This came at Port Shepstone Country Club this week, where Cameron has played most of his golf.
He shot 73 to win by three. His round included three birdies, two bogeys and a ‘silly’ double bogey on the 13th.

Cameron’s birdies came at the 4th, 11th and 12th. So, the double at 13 really hurt, but not that much in the end.
Still, he was pleased with his win, it coming off the back of a runner-up finish at Margate Country Club the day before, where he scored 75 to finish one shot behind the winner.

A little while before that he tied for third at Amanzimtoti, shooting 80 on a day where scoring was difficult in the wet weather. On that day he opened with 36 and then had a bad back nine, 44.

He rounded off the three-day South Coast mini tour with an inglorious 83 at Southbroom, the club where he is handicapped.

Perhaps he was trying too hard, or perhaps it was a case of coming off the high of winning but it wasn’t his best day, despite perfect weather.

He had a triple on the 3rd (not the first to have done that and won’t be the last), plus two doubles which didn’t help his cause.
No doubt the lanky youngster will bounce back.

Next up is the Southern KZN Closed at Southbroom this Saturday, followed by the San Lameer Open on January 28.
Then it’ll be time for some schools cricket.
