Closed provides open opportunities for SKZN golfers

More than 30 players are expected for the Southern KZN Closed golf tournament at Southbroom Golf Club this Saturday.

More than 30 players are expected for the Southern KZN Closed golf tournament at Southbroom Golf Club this Saturday.

That could be close to a record, and its especially encouraging considering some of the regular players are not able to play for various reasons.

The tournament serves to give an indication as to who’s in form ahead of the annual KZN Country Districts Interzone which will be held at Southbroom from March 8-10.

Southern KZN are defending champions and will look to add another plaque to the huge wooden shield that is the trophy.

The Closed will be played over 36 holes – strokeplay for the A division and Individual Stableford for the B division.
There is a chance SKZN will field two teams depending on player availability.

But if not, then there is definitely some competition for the last few places in the eight-man line-up.
A number of local golfers have played for the KZN Mid-Amateur team at IPT in the past few years.
They are Gavin Sole (Southbroom), Matt Sutherland (Umdoni Park), Chris Zietsman (Selborne Park), Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) and Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom).

Others in the mix include Robert Mavundla, Cameron Olivant, Graham Sole, David Rush, Cyprian Xolo, Nic Crossman, Gary Purtell and Grant Richards (all Southbroom), plus Koos Jacobs and Elvis Khawula (both Margate) and Sidney Shingange (Port Shepstone).

The Closed also gives others the chance to stake a claim for selection to the teams, should they so wish.
The course has had a lot of rain this holiday and will be in lush condition.
