Double wicket cricket for juniors

The format was an interesting one. Each boy batted with a partner, for a total of 10 overs.

Port Shepstone Country Club junior cricket section hosted a fun Double Wicket Tournament last Saturday.
Jayden Derksen emerged as the player of the day, thanks to some sensible batting and economical bowling.

The format was an interesting one. Each boy batted with a partner, for a total of 10 overs.
If they were dismissed they lost two runs.
Each of the other players bowled one over each at the batting pair.
Five-ball overs were used for the sake of time. Wides and no-balls counted as two runs and the ball was not re-bowled.

Enjoying the day are (back, from left) Ruan Smit, Benjamin Kunz, Aiden Peterson, Jayden Derksen, Reuben Kunz, Orlando Lombard, Saien Chetty and Kaleb de Beer; (middle) Francois Smit, Damion Bezuidenhout, Stiaan Fritz and Luke Moschides, with Daniel Rush in front.

Best pair of the day went to Damion Bezuidenhout and Stiaan Fritz, helped by many wides. Damion batted with a hamstring strain but still managed to whack a few past the tyres (boundary).
Best bowler was Ruan Smit with three wickets. Francois Smit and Saien Chetty also picked up three wickets on the day. Benjamin Kunz only took one wicket but leaked very few runs, as was the case with Jayden.

Best batsman was Kaleb de Beer with a vibrant innings that included four boundaries. He also fielded well, being involved in three run outs.
Best fielder was Aiden Peterson, who dropped a sitter, and then bounced back to pouch three much more difficult catches.

The pair that made the most runs off the bat (excluding wides and no-balls) was Francois Smit and Daniel Rush.

Francois also received the sportsmanship prize, for his encouragement of the players, even sometimes for the players he was bowling against.

Luke Moschides probably would have shared the ‘most spirited’ award – if there was one – with Daniel for their friendly banter.
Orlando Lombard produced arguably the shot of the day, a cover drive caressed for four with superb timing.
Reuben Kunz was the neutral wicket-keeper for the day.
