Surfers spread ocean stoke

This is part of the wonderful process of getting more people into the water.

“Absolutely inspiring!” is how surfer Bronson Naude (47) describes his recent mission.

In May this year, Bronson and Edwin (Eddie) Lang (48) took wheelchair-bound, Muzi Fodo surfing.
The surfers loved every minute of the experience with him, and vowed to take more physically challenged people surfing.

This time, Muzi invited friends, Mandisa Mnguni from Margate Ext 3 and Mfundo Ciliza from Gamalakhe.

Bronson runs a surf shop in Manaba and works with former legendary lifesaver, Edwin. He said this recent mission is part of the wonderful process of getting more people into the water, and they had so much fun.

Some start-off training in the pool, while others are brave enough to ride the waves in the ocean.

“It’s lovely to see the excitement on their faces. They arrive nervous, and by the time they leave they are all smiles having had a great experience in the ocean, something different to what they are used to everyday.”

St Mike’s beach was a special place for Muzi, two months before his life-changing accident in 2013 which left him paralysed from the chest down, he had jumped into the ocean and saved the life of a child but his uncle unfortunately drowned.

Muzi sat in his wheelchair staring at the ocean more than a 100 times, but not one surfer had ever spoken to him.
Two months later after Bronson and Muzi had exchanged telephone numbers, Muzi gave Bronson a call, and the trio went on a surf adventure.
Muzi had the best time of his life in the ocean.

“Muzi is such an inspiration. We thought we were helping him, but in fact, he changed the way we look at life,” said Bronson.

And, that is how Bronson and Eddie started their mission to spread the stoke!
