‘Bruised’ Wade Young ready for Roof

Wade is looking forward to the big event, nicknamed the Mother of Hard Enduros, and says everything is ready, he’s good to go.

International extreme enduro rider Wade Young was in a relaxed mood when his visited Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach late last week.

With the Roof of Africa due to start today (Thursday) he was there to take delivery of a courtesy vehicle – an impressive Toyota Hilux Legend – and chatted freely with sales executive Marius Stewart and other staff.

More specifically, it was a top of the range Toyota Hilux Legend RS 2.8 4×4 Double Cab.

Despite being only 27 years old, Wade is already a Roof of Africa Legend, having won it seven times. He made history by becoming the youngest winner at the age of 16. He’s been a top enduro contender since.

He’s not exactly sure how many he’s raced, but has been hampered by injury in at least two.

There is some bruising on his left arm. It’s bright and purple and quite a sight.

This he sustained while in the process of lapping a rider in a race in Indonesia last week.

The rider swerved awkwardly trying to get out of his way and the result was that Wade’s arm got stuck in the handlebars.

He managed to stay on the bike, so overall it wasn’t too serious.

It’s not bothering him at all, he’s used to all the regular bumps and scrapes all enduro riders endure and would appear to be quietly confident of more success in Lesotho this weekend.

The courtesy vehicle is ideally suited for a trip to the rugged terrain the Roof of Africa and Lesotho are famous for.

Wade thanked Toyota for their ongoing support. “They’ve backed me and I really do appreciate it,” he said.

Marius wished Wade well and was looking forward to see him potentially win another title.

Wade hails from Paddock and attended school (when he wasn’t racing!) at Creston College.

Now he travels the world competing in events and has made a name for himself globally.

His racing number is 55 and he rides for Sherco Factory Team.
