Uvongo Tennis Club hosted their annual Veterans Tournament recently, attracting players of all skill levels from across the province.

The tournament was well attended and played in great spirit across the board with the club proving, once again, to be exceptional hosts, providing a fantastic spread, friendly environment and a well organised format.

In total, 32 players entered and were broken up into eight teams of four players each, using a unique team format which attempts to balance strength for strength players, resulting in a very competitive event.

The weather on the sometimes sunny South Coast is always a factor but wet courts on Sunday morning were quickly dealt with by dedicated tennis enthusiasts, armed with brooms and leaf blowers.
After a short delay, play continued under blue skies.

While anyone who spends their weekend engaged in an active and social sport like tennis is already a winner, someone had to take home the cup.

Poppies won the B Section, made up of Candace Wilkie, Augustine Tugli, Frank Hall and Jenny Senneck.
Peacocks won the A Section, made up of Wayne Manning, Pippa Hopkins, Sharon van der Schyff and Steve du Plessis.

Runners-up were Simone Hattingh, Gavin Bean, Trevor Small and Renee Purtell.

The club thanked their many generous sponsors who aided greatly in the success of this event.
Club members and committee should be commended for running such a superb tournament and for their continued passion in driving competitive tennis in the Ugu region.
