Mini cricket fun and games for future stars

It was a fabulous day for the children, a lifetime opportunity for many, allowing them to enjoy being part of something they probably never could have dreamed possible.

The boys just did not want to go home, even after hours of playing KFC Mini Cricket Festival at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday.
That’s how much fun they were having, playing a sport many clearly love.

Zibu Malamba smashes one far and fantastically.

It was hosted jointly by the KZN Cricket Union and Southern KZN Cricket Union, and attracted youngsters from all over, including Gamalakhe and numerous local schools.

“Southern KZN hosts this event twice a year. Invitations were sent mainly to cricket development schools. However, only those who replied were accommodated,” said convener Ben Malamba.

Thuso Mavundla charges in to bowl.

“Our first of this kind in 2023 was held in March this year and we were pleased to have a second one last Sunday for the fourth quarter.”

Ten mini cricket pitches were drawn/laid. It’s estimated that some 230 children took part on the day, with many coaches, parents and teachers present as well.

Schools that were present included Sethembinkosi Primary, Ohlangeni Primary, Ensimbini Primary, Gamalakhe LP, Bhuhlebezwe SP, Hlanganani Prepatory School, Merlewood Primary, Marburg Primary, Margate Primary Invitation and Invitation XI.

Introducing tip-and-run for a bit of run made running between the wickets more challenging than usual.

“The invitation team was picked from those who couldn’t gain first team selection in their school’s team of eight, allowing as many as possible to take part,” explained Ben.

He added that the KZN Cricket Union has already promised to bring another festival to the area towards the end of the first term next year, possibly being held at the Ugu Sports and Lesiure Centre.

It takes all styles to get the job done.
