Interclub triumph for Grace and Rina

The ladies' tournament is famously festive and this year was no different as friendships were formed and renewed.

Grace Fourie and Rina Rito had a superb time of it at the 2023 KZN Ladies’ Interclub golf tournament, winning the bronze division in fine style.

Home course advantage helped the Margate Country Club pair somewhat, but in all honesty the way the wind blew, especially on Friday, it had golfers guessing, hoping and praying.

Jean Cole (Southbroom) putts on the 9th hole.

The format is foursomes, a challenging one to say the least.
Grace said it was a fantastic feeling for her and Rina to win the trophy.

“We shared it with Southbroom a few years ago, when the interclub was at Port Shepstone, but to be sole winners at our home club is a bonus,” she said.

She added that it had been an absolute privilege for Margate to host Interclub and was looking forward to the next edition.

“Hopefully we can defend our title next year when Richards Bay will host.”

The club and golf union executive came in for some major praise from the golfers for the hosting of an excellent event. The course received numerous compliments on its superb condition.

One of the surprising highlights was golf pro Willem Lindeque’s rendition of Bed of Roses, apparently so good Jon Bon Jovi himself may have been thoroughly impressed, if not a touch jealous.

The gold division was won by Bronwyn and Michelle Rae from Mount Edgecombe Country Club on 248.
In second place were Leizl Smit (Vryheid) and Estelle Byrne (Prince’s Grant) on 251.
Sandi Burger and Kim Strauss (Port Shepstone) battled bravely but had to settle for third place eventually on 254, their third day letting them down a touch.

Jennifer Duncan (Port Shepstone).

The silver division was won by Umhlali Country Club’s team of Shelley Sykes and Shellee Payne on a three-day score of 261 (88 83 90).

Best of the locals were Jane Lind and Marietjie Stols (Port Shepstone) in 13th place on 278.
Aside from Grace and Rina, a number of South Coast teams (upper and lower) featured in the bronze division, scoring in Stableford points.

Results are as follows: 1st Grace Fourie and Rina Rito (Margate) 98, 2nd Tanya Adams and Sara Dand (MECC) 95, 3rd Hayley Gilliver and Alex Morris (Scottburgh) 94, 4th Sue Boucher and Gill Symons (Umkomaas) 94, 5th Jenny Hulley and Anni Stoppel (Port Shepstone) 93, 6th Louise Leal and Jean Cole (Southbroom) 93, 7th Cecelia Verster and Jennifer Duncan (Port Shepstone) 92, 8th Gwyneth Wright and Cynthia Daniels (Southbroom) 92, 9th Margaret Maytham and Piyubala Naran (Royal Durban) 91, 10th Annie Creane and Diana Nadauld (Port Shepstone) 89.
