Umdoni do Selborne a favour in league golf

It's all down to Selborne and they'll face resurgent Margate in the final round, which is to be played at Umdoni on October 22.

Umdoni Park A did their local rivals Selborne Park a huge favour by holding Southbroom Golf Club to a 6-6 draw in the penultimate round of the Southern KZN handicap golf league for 2023.

While Adrian van Vuuren and his Selborne team mates had their feet up at home watching the Springboks and Proteas in fine form, the rest battled it out at host club Port Shepstone CC last Sunday.

With Umdoni A and Southbroom sharing the spoils, it means Southbroom A have the clubhouse lead, but also have a bye in the final round.

So, it’s all down to Selborne and they’ll face resurgent Margate in the final round, which is to be played at Umdoni on October 22.

A win or half seals it for them. With a win, Selborne will have 10 log points and edge ahead of Southbroom A on nine. With a half, they will tie but will have half a match point more, 43 to 42,5.

Port Shepstone Country Club trounced Southbroom B 11-1, knocking them out of the title race.
Margate CC beat Umdoni B 8,5-3,5 for their best result in some time, giving Southbroom A perhaps a glimmer of hope that they may possibly be able to cause an upset against Selborne, although it’s unlikely – Adrian and co are far too savvy.

LOG: Southbroom A 9 (42,5); Selborne 8 (37); Port Shepstone 6 (38,5); Southbroom B 6 (30); Umdoni A 3 (30); Margate 2 (19,5); Umdoni B 2 (18,5).
* In other SKZN news, Jason Gilliver is in action for the men’s team at the SA Interprovincial at East London.
Gavin Sole, while still good enough to make the team on merit, is the manager. (He has opted to focus on mid-amateur golf).

Looking ahead, the Southern KZN Open will be played at Margate CC on Sunday, November 12 – and not 19 as previously stated.
