Margate boxer goes pro

The boxer from Margate Ext 3 is the first from the South Coast to have a pro fight.

Blood, sweat and tears have led to Sphelele Vellem (29) earning a pro boxing contract.
His first fight will be in Mooi River on October 7.
Vellem fondly known as ‘Nara’ hails from Margate Ext 3.

He said it was a honour to have his talent and potential recognised by professionals in the industry, and to be given the opportunity to pursue his passion on a larger scale.

“I am grateful for the faith and support given to me. It’s an honour to represent my community and showcase the talent and potential that exists in our area. I feel a responsibility to inspire other aspiring boxers and show them that with hard work and determination, dreams can become a reality,” he said.

Vellem said he is incredibly excited about his first boxing pro match as it’s a culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

“I have been training rigorously, focusing on improving my technique, strength, and conditioning. I am ensuring that I am mentally and physically prepared to give my best performance in the ring.”

As a professional boxer, Vellem’s ultimate goal is to become a world champion in his weight division. “I want to test my skills against the best fighters, compete on big stages, and leave a lasting legacy in the sport. Along the way, I aim to win regional and national titles, establish myself as a respected contender, and gain the respect of the boxing community.”

His coach Roland van Rooyen from Box360 Movement in Margate said he was beyond thrilled and couldn’t be prouder of the hard work and dedication Nara has put into his boxing journey.

“Countless hours of training, sacrifices and pushing limits have brought him to this incredible milestone. It’s time to unleash the warrior within. Nara, you have the heart of a true champion, and I have no doubt that you will dominate in the ring. This is your moment to shine and make your mark in the world of professional boxing,” said Van Rooyen.
