Third career ace for Dave Kemp

The latest news and results from Umkomaas Golf Club.

The August monthly medal was contested by 56 players across five divisions in what can only be described as a perfect KZN coastal winter’s day – bright, cool, and not too windy.

While the course is a little dry, it is playing brilliantly, as the sub-par scores attest. The club looks forward to reaping the rewards from the newly sunk borehole.

The men’s Monthly Mug was won by A Division winner, Brian Kassel who shot a four-under-par nett 66. He counted out B Division winner Dave Kemp, but methinks he didn’t mind too much given that he scored a Hole in One. The ace on the 4th scored him 5 points on the opening of the four Jackpot holes, helping him to scoop the winnings there, finishing with 12 points.

This was 73 year old Dave’s third ace in his golfing career, the last one being on the 13th at Umkomaas back in 2009. Dave shared that his playing partner, Neil De Villiers teed off first and hit an absolute cracker which they all commented must have finished very close for a guaranteed two-club. When Dave teed up, he took the usual route over the left-hand bunker, but it got a massive bounce up towards the left bank, but Dave wasn’t worried, commenting to the others on the tee that he wouldn’t be surprised to find it close to the hole.

When the gents got up to the green, only one ball was visible and so the hunt began. After a few minutes Dave suggested looking in the hole. When Neil found the ball there, he got excited, thinking it was his, only to discover momentarily that it was in fact Dave’s ball which had found its resting place at the bottom of the cup.

The Ladies’ Medal Glass was lifted by Bryony Rodgers who also scored a four-better-than-par nett 66. Second place was awarded to Heather Parsonage on nett 74.

The Men’s C Division was won by Dave Robertson scoring nett 71. And Brian Kassel, Dave Mulroy, and Dave Kemp shared the Two Club pot.

Last weekend the Ladies and Men’s Allerton sides both played league in trying weather conditions. The men beat Athlone 8.5 to 3.5 at Kloof, while the ladies emerged victorious 4-2 over Toti at Southbroom. The ladies all walked off the course looking rather wind blown having been challenged with hectic wind, including gusts of up to 70km per hour! Well done teams, you do Umkomaas proud.
