Fishermen’s catches inspected at The Block

Some of the fishermen were unhappy about the operation and seemed a bit shaken.

Inspectors from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment visited The Block in Port Shepstone on Monday morning this week, to check up whether fishermen had not caught more than their bag limit.

Law enforcement was also present to oversee the operation.

Some of the fishermen were unhappy with the operation and seemed a bit shaken.
Tonie van Westhuizen, a holidaymaker said it’s a good initiative.

As it is shad season, some fishermen catch more than the legal limit. The inspectors also stopped and searched vehicles.

A source known to the Herald, who did not want to be named, said inspectors will return to The Block because it is one of the hotspots on the South Coast, where some fishermen do not abide by the law.

“During the operation we issued a fine, some of the fisherman fled and some of them did catch more than they should have.”
The source went on to say that the department will not only be focusing on fishing but also environmental issues.

Tonie van der Westhuizen said he is glad that inspectors from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment carried out an operation at The Block earlier this week.
