Umkomaas Whalers retain Sardine Run title

Scottburgh golf news and results.

The visitors and Sardine Run players arrived in time too see the greatest shoal on earth as the silver fish passed by Scottburgh last Tuesday.
The sardines and the breaching whales were a sight to behold.

Wednesday’s individual Stableford was sponsored by the Umthunzi Hotel. The field was boosted by some ‘runners’ re-acquainting themselves with the course and others finding their way round. Les Huddle, resident visitor played to his handicap and ran out winning a two night stay. Mike Eley was counted out for second place but will nevertheless be taking wife Maggie for an overnight stay. The hidden holes were not found, but John Mills scooped the two club pool all by himself.

Friendships were renewed and new friends made last Wednesday evening and a few sore heads teed it up early the next morning.

After the first round played as an Alliance the defending champions Umkomaas Whalers jumped into the lead with 88 points. Second place on a count out went to Hadeda with 85 followed by last year’s runners-up Hayley’s Comets also on 85. Friday was the day to start moving but there was no shifting our neighbours from up the road. After day two they held their lead with an aggregate score of 169.

Hayley’s team crept into second place totalling 161 and the million dollars were three adrift with 158. And so the Friday night festivities began – ‘oh my head’, ‘what did we drink last night’, ‘your fault we stayed so long’, were some of the comments as drive after drive hit the trees instead of the short grass on Saturday morning.
However, there was no stopping the Whalers team of Viv Naiker, Viven Gounden, Dheen Naiker and Martin du Plessis as they increased their lead to finish with 252 to retain their title. Hayley’s Comets with Hayley Gilliver, Alex Morris, Pamela Mayberry and Delia Cockerill tried but were left in second spot with 240 and in third place Remax led by Pat Symcox made a move finishing with 229.

At the prizegiving, captain Bob Hall thanked players for their participation, the sponsors and the catering staff.
Prizes were awarded right down the field.

Also, thanks to the sponsors and to those in the wings who helped. The 40 teams were praised the tournament and the course with some pledging their return next year.

Coming up today (21st) is a betterball Stableford and Saturday (24th) will be the monthly medal sponsored by DisChem.

Flyer’s footnote; Golf is essentially an exercise in masochism conducted out of doors; it affords opportunity for bragging, it induces a sense of kinsmanship in it’s victims and it forces us to breathe fresh air. But it is in the end an elaborate and addictive rite calculated to drive us crazy and send us to the bar afterwards.
