Cycle race takes centre stage at Scotties

It was a great success not only for the club, but the community too.

The main theme of this week at Scotties was not so much golf as the sani2C cycle race. The restaurant finished its make-over and the bar was filled to capacity with storage space used wherever it could be found. The staff and committee worked extremely hard to get this event ready and deserve a show of thanks.

However, the golf continued with the usual betterball Stableford last Wednesday. Current holder of the Stone Graham Brown took John Mills as his partner and together they turned the tables with a 44 point total for a win.

Wayne Simpson picked up his weekly stipend with Tony Power in tow for a second placed 41 point total. No one found the hidden holes and surprisingly there were no 2 clubs. We said our farewells to Mick and Joan Marriott after the game. They are returning to the UK somewhere near Nottingham. Mick has featured regularly in this column over the years and will be missed for his sometimes contribution to the Stone. We wish them well in their new adventure and maybe we’ll see them back someday.

The cycle race took centre stage last Friday and Saturday and was a great success not only for the cyclists who trudged 260km from Himeville, but for the club and the community who came out and supported them. Next year is the 20th running or should that be cycling of this prestigious event and we’ll do our part to contribute towards its success as an even bigger show is expected.

On Saturday the Umthunzi Hotel will be the sponsors of the Individual Stableford.

The Club Championships are to be played over the weekend of May 20 and 21. The list will soon be on the board so watch out for it and let’s fill it up.

Flyer’s footnote: Some golf course architects dream of creating the perfect golf hole whilst some golfers dream of boiling the architects in oil.
