SCR Mkhulu in finals of inter-region competition

The SCR committee is hosting a fundraiser Betterball golf day this Sunday.

The first two rounds of the KZN Inter-Region competition were held at Simbithi last weekend. Both days were made extra challenging by swirling winds which had many players scratching their heads over club selection on the tricky short course.

The SCR Mkuhla team, captained by Umkomaas’ Natalie Singer, and included playing partner Sabiha Hulley, took on the Midlands team in round one and emerged victorious 5 points to 3. The SCR Umdoni team, in which Max van de Heever and Heather Parsonage debuted, were defeated by one of three Durban Region sides, the Invitationals, who used their course knowledge to their advantage.

Round two took place early last Sunday morning, with the winners from round one squaring up, and losers moving into the Plate division. SCR Mkuhla were in for a tough match at Durban Region Swifts which included a Simbithi player in each of their four pairings. But some strategic decisions on pairing order paid off with Sheppie duo Cecilia Verster and Yzelle Greyling, pulling off a spectacular 5 and 3 victory over Simbithi course record holder Michell Dold and her partner in the number one pairing.

With the score tied up at 4 points each, the count out on number one pairing result sealed the victory for SCR Mkuhla. They will now take on the remaining Durban Region side, the Swallows, in the final to be played at Dundee in May.

The SCR Umdoni team put in a commanding performance last Sunday, to beat the Northern Zulus 6 points to 2 and will face Midlands for the Plate final honours on the same weekend.

The SCR committee is hosting a fundraiser Betterball golf day this Sunday (2nd), at Umdoni, to help with costs associated with sending 16 ladies to Dundee, and there are still spots left in the field. If you’re interested in playing or sponsoring a hole, please contact sandiburger61@gmail.com

In other news, 85 players participated in the second Alliance League fixture last Saturday with The Naickers (Tom and Dheen Naicker, Fazel Khan and Kuben Naidoo) playing exceptional golf once again, enabling them to take top honours.
Scoring 89 points, they finished three points ahead of the Perky Putters (Linda Toward, Sue Boucher, Gustav Schmidt and Doug Wilson), in second spot. Third place was decided on count-out on 84 points, with the Romeos (Russell and Evija McKelvey, Noel Parsonage and Damien O’Connell) securing third place.

Russell McKelvey amassed 11 points in the Jackpot to secure the winnings, and the Two Club pot was split seven ways between Jacques Hulley, Mickey Eriksen, Wayne Addison, Robbie Bruce, Patrick Ndlovu, Noel Parsonage and Mark Bezencon.

A three-way tie at 39 points was decided by count out during last Wednesday’s Blue Tee competition. Emerging victorious after the count out, was Steve Oliver, from Chris Viljoen and Dave Mulroy.
