No silverware for Umkomaas at stormy Interclub

The tournament is always a whole lot of fun, both on and off the course.

Eight ladies travelled to Dundee to compete in the KZN Ladies Interclub. Three teams competed in the bronze division and one in the gold division. The tournament takes place over three days and is a foursomes (alternate shots) format which has the potential to turn friends into foes. Thankfully, despite less than spectacular golf, our teammates all remained fast friends, enjoying the country hospitality.

Conditions tested the players with 40 degrees Celsius on Day 1 followed by an epic thunder and lightning storm that lasted five hours and dropped 58mm of rain, swelling the dams and creating additional difficulties for some of the shorter hitters who faced an extra long carry on several of the holes on Day 2. The final day was wet, wet, wet with rain and cold winds providing another challenge to the teams. Compliments must be extended to the Dundee greenkeeping team as the course was in the best condition I’ve ever experienced.

In true Ladies Interclub tradition, the more than hundred ladies present got into theme on each of the function nights, and Umkomaas can certainly be proud of their efforts in the fun department. Many compliments were extended about our Shisinyama evening outfits and of course the Great Gatsby final night celebrations.

Shisinyama fun at the Gatsby evening. Having a blast are Umkomaas Golf Club’s (from left) Evija McKelvey, Bryony Rodgers, Natalie Singer, Linda Toward, Gill Symons, Denise Nel and Sabiha Hulley with Max van der Heever in front.

And while Umkomaas didn’t feature in the prize-giving it was wonderful to see how well our fellow South Coast Region (SCR) ladies performed. Scottburgh pairing of Hayley Gilliver and Alex Morris were joint winners of the bronze division, and Port Shepstone’s Kim Strauss and Sandi Burger won the silver division.

Sheppie’s Yzelle Greyling and Jennifer Duncan also blew everyone away with their incredible 80 gross, nett 61.5 on day one, equalling the best score posted in the gold division. Well done ladies, wonderful to see our region so strong.
Back home, the Saturday club competition winners were George Haupt and Ian Reid whose 70 points was enough to win Combined Stableford. Second, third, and fourth place were decided by count-outs on 68 points, with William Creaney and Frans Rossouw taking it from Kuben Naidoo and Dheen Naicker, and Harold Horsley and Donald Bradshaw respectively.

Natalie Singer and Sabiha Hulley, geared up and ready to go.

The jackpot was earned by Mark Bezencon, and the 2-club pot shared between Willie O’Connell, Noah Rudwick, Wally Kent, Kuben Naidoo, and Dheen Naicker. Good luck to our men’s teams who compete this coming weekend in the KZN Men’s Interclub down the South Coast.
