Scottburgh golfers remember Heno in style

Fun was had at a remembrance golf day.

It seems anybody can attempt to be a champion golfer. Take last week as a wannabe champ teed it up in a US qualifier and shot a respectable 69. Not bad except it was his first nine score.

It seems all you have to do is fill in the form and put an X beside ‘professional’, pay your $250 and you’re in. He did however break one record held by John Daly in that he went 2-18. That is he made a 2-club on a par 3 then a 18 on the following par 5. John’s previous record was 2-17.

We’re not that bad at Scotties, but as we’ve seen even a ghost can win a prize. Spoekie was taking time out this week as Roly Tickle and Geoff Thommasen won the Wednesday betterball bash with 45 points. The two old ‘Amp tramps’ Gary Jones and John Mills were 3 adrift on 42 for second place and no 2 clubs recorded. New members Steven Myburgh and Alwyn Stander were introduced to our Stone last week and decided to hold on for another week.

It was all systems go on Saturday for the late Heno Gradwell’s birthday bash arranged by son Anthony, better known as ‘Camel’. Friends came from far and wide to play in this remembrance day. Dee Coetzee whose late husband Johnny was one of Heno’s best friends came up all the way from PE or whatever they call it these days.

Colin Moodie (my erstwhile mentor) another big connection dusted off his clubs and made an appearance and won the hearts of all when he was presented with a special prize from Camel. There was over R18 000 worth of prizes on offer and were given out down to 26th place. Not enough room here to mention them all, but our thanks go to them for making the day extra special.

Captain Bob Hall and betterhalf Linda stole the show with 44 points to win first place and a holiday at Eden River Lodge. Coming a close second were John Mills and Kevin Ramkisson with 43 and another husband and wife duo Pete and Hayley Gilliver made third with 42.

Heather Stanton and friend Celeste didn’t pick up the Stone, but were awarded a pocket of lemons to take away the smiles. A great day and the pub being full a great evening lasting well into the night.

We wish the ladies well in the upcoming inter club which is to be played at Dundee this week.

Flyer’s footnote: It’s a strange thing that we know just how to do a thing at golf and yet we cannot do it.
