KZN wins national indigenous games

Indigenous games will be coming back to the KZN South Coast in 2023.

It was an auspicious closing ceremony for the 2022 national Indigenous Games at Ugu Sports and Leisure last Wednesday.

Themed ‘Celebrating the Legacy of Solomon Linda and South Africa’s Indigenous Music’, the games encompassed a total of nine indigenous sporting codes; dibeke, diketo, ncuva, morabaraba, lintonga, drie stokkies, kgati, Jukskei and kho kho.

KwaZulu-Natal was crowned the official winners of the five-day tournament for the third consecutive year, and announced as the hosts of the 2023 games to be played in September.

All the best performing athletes for the games were awarded medals at their respective sporting venues – Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre, Margate Country Club and Margate Sports School before coming to the official closing ceremony.

Speaking at the closing, Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nocawe Mafu said this year’s games were very competitive.

“All the provinces did well with the Eastern Cape placing third and Limpopo crowned as the runner-up. We hope to see the bottom six provinces also climbing up the ladder next year,”Mafu added.

She also congratulated the other teams, Northern Cape – 9th, Free State – 8th, Gauteng -7th, Mpumalanga – 6th, Western Cape – 5th and North West – 4th.

To close off the ceremony, KZN’s hip-hop sensation, Big Zulu entertained the teams and delegates, performing his top hits,’ Mali Eningi, Umuzi eSandton and Ivolovolo.
