Peter Toward is Monthly Mug winner for August

Great Umkomaas golfing and successful competitions.

The monthly medal competition was played recently and while it seemed, at least based on the ominous dark clouds in the morning, that rain would once again threaten proceedings, it turned out a lovely day for golf at Umkomaas.

There were 56 players that competed across several divisions, vying for the chance to raise the Halfway Malanda Medal glass.

Peter Toward had a smashing day, shooting four better than his handicap to post 66 nett and take top honours in the C Division and be crowned the Monthly Mug winner for August. The ladies’ winner was Heather Parsonage who added another medal glass to her growing collection.

Results for the various divisions were:

A Division was won by Noel Parsonage on 74 nett, with John Webster second on 76 nett. B Division faired better with Wally Kent playing to his handicap and posting nett 70 to take first place from Dave Kemp who finished 71 nett. Peter Toward won C division, with Ken Koster runner-up on 70 nett, a score that on another day would have been good enough for the win.

Brian Stephen shot the lights out on the four jackpot holes to rack up 11 points and take the cash. Two clubs were aplenty, with the kitty being split among Peter Toward, Jordan Bernardis, Wally Kent, Brian Stephen and Noel Parsonage.

The Ladies’ section hosted a Rose and Thorns Alliance competition on Women’s Day as part of their fundraising efforts to support the team of eight ladies who will be travelling to compete in KZN Interclub in Dundee later this year. The event was extremely well supported with 68 players in the field.

Winning on a count-out on an exceptional score of 86 points were the team of Tash, Dean, and Tom Naicker with their rose Bryony Rodgers.

Runners-up were John Webster, Denise Nell, Bing Opie, and Claudio Bellato. Prizes were paid down to sixth place and the most accurate were rewarded with delicious wine for nearest the pins on the short holes.

As is customary at #thefriendliestclub, a wonderful braai was enjoyed by the players and their families. An enormous thank you must go to the ladies who all brought delicious salads/rolls to bring and share, and to those who worked behind the scenes to make the tournament a success.
