Golfers brave elements at Scottburgh club champs

Championship golfers congratulated for participating.

As a warm up to last weekend’s Club Championships at Scottburgh, an Individual Stableford competition was held last Wednesday with the serious folks teeing it up, looking the part.

Captain Bob Hall showed us the way with a 36 point total, edging out manager and fellow competitor Deanne Joost by count out in a very tight game all round. Mike Hogan and Geoff Thommasen found the hidden holes with Mike giving back for the Stone’s upkeep.

And so to the annual Club Championships played over a weather-wise miserable weekend. Some of us having been to the practice tee during the week couldn’t remember what to do once we got to the first tee.

Saturday came and all the world shouted “Fore”. The breeze as it came off the sea seemed to bring a message of hope and promise of chip shots and sideways putts holed. Well, it was for some of us anyway. After the first round Nivash Mahabeer held sway over Barry Kisten by 2 strokes in an up and down round.

Bob Hall was hanging on to his B division title also by 2 from Tony Moore. Anton Visage again by 2 keeping out Russel Freeman in the C division. Sunday, a day when the godly should have been elsewhere and many of us wished we were. Cold, wet and miserable, not only the players teed it up for a final push unceremoniously dressed in tracksuits, beanies and winter jackets, hip flasks surreptitiously hidden from view.

It’s been said that only on his wedding day does a man feel the same sensation of impending doom as he feels on the final day of the golf championships. Brave men don’t cry over spilt beer and missed putts, but many of us came close on Sunday morning.

Nivash Mahabeer held on to his 2 stroke advantage to win the A division over Barry Kisten. Similarly Bob Hall retained his B division title also by 2 over Wayne Simpson and completing a hat-trick of B division wins. In the C division Anton Visage overcame a spirited defence and took the division. Nivash was ultimately crowned champion golfer for the year with his 161 gross score total.

Captain Bob Hall congratulated all the winners and proclaimed that everyone who braved the elements also were winners. Thanks were given and appreciated to Local Choice Pharmacy for its sponsorship of the weekend. Tales of woe and shots that might have been resounded in the bar afterwards as the spirit in the club (and the bottles) were re-told and commiserated with, sometimes with smiles and hearty laughter.

Coming up on Wednesday is a sociable betterball and on Saturday Umthunzi Hotel will be the sponsors of an Individual Stableford.

Flyer’s footnote: Gentlemen play golf and if you aren’t a gentleman before you start after the crushing events of the game you surely become one.
