SA champs for strongman Ruben

The former Suid-Natal High pupil has been putting in the hours at gym.

Ruben du Plessis (22) of Tweni has recently qualified for the South African Strongest Man competition, in the under 80kg division.

The contest is to be held at Steineck Lodge in Rustenburg this weekend.
After two years of training, Ruben recently qualified for SA’s after he competed at the KZN’s Strongest Man held in Westville.

“There are some 80 competitors and I will be representing the South Coast at the contest this weekend,” he said.
The former Suid-Natal High pupil has been putting in the hours at the gym. Ruben is trained by Arné van Niekerk, who is no stranger to power lifting. “I train on average 10 hours a week, two hours a day.”

Ruben du Plessis lifts 200kg during a training session.

Why does he love strongman? “I think it is the most challenging physical thing any human being can do, testing how far you are willing to push your mind and body. I think I’m addicted to the feeling I get when I pick up something heavy,” he said.

“Let’s see how the weekend goes, maybe I will give up my studying and become a full time strongman contestant,” he said with a laugh.
