Chills and thrills at Scottburgh Golf Club

German golfer, legendary Bernhard Langer (65), won his 47th senior golf tournament last weekend, providing inspiration to many and showing that the longer you practice the better you get.
Back home, last Wednesday was what members call a ‘realmizz’ day for golf. Beanies and longs were seen and the odd hip flask may or may not have been safely tucked away in that secret golf bag pocket. John Mills weathered the cold to post 35 points for a countout win over Thay Govender, John also running in the only two-club.
Clyde Leisegang took over the ownership of the Stone from son-in-law Brett McNealy with his 23 points.
Dolores McAuliffe scored 11 points in the fairway Friday five-pin competition to win by one from Jack Gillam, winning the R200 against Jack’s R100.
Saturday’s weather changed dramatically for the better with summer attire worn and the Indian Ocean was ‘C flat Major’ as the musicians would say.
John Mills carried forward his recent good form, ably assisted by Steven Myburgh, to seal a win with 44 points in the P&G Construction betterball Stableford.
Just one behind on 43 was the father-and-son combination of Nivash and Aarvan Mahabeer.
Aarvan is just nine years old with a handicap of 29 and the club’s newest youngster.
Members still remember when Jason Gilliver and the dynamic duo of Cubitt twins Jack and Luke were teeing it up as ‘lighties’ in the Saturday competitions.
Maybe Aarvan is another star in the making.
In third place Jamie Chetty and TM Moodley scored 42 points.
Nearest the pins went to Deena Govender (2nd), Deane Jooste (5th), Nicky Klopper (10th) and John Mills (17th), with Nicky rolling in the solitary two-club to scoop the pool.
The farmer and the Major, Org Viviers and Anton Visage were the recipients of the Stone for their 32 points.
The matchplay in each division is under way with efforts needed to get it finished as soon as possible.
