Club champs coming up at Scottburgh GC

A wake in the remembrance of Rupert Jones will be held on Friday (15th).

Now that the ladies are singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak as both men and ladies have the same pars and stroke indices, it’s nice to see them competing with the men in the same competitions.

Not much sign of them on Wednesdays however, maybe they’re housekeeping so they can play on Saturday.

Newly retired Gary Jones is making the best of it as he partnered Mike Hogan on Wednesday to win the Combined Stableford with 64 points. Coming second one point further back were John Mills and Bob Hall on 63 letting themselves down with a couple of ‘Eskom’s’- blackouts to the uninitiated. Spoekie our resident ghost caused a chill as he/she/it and Mick Marriot lifted the Stone.

Seeff Properties held its monthly sponsored day last Saturday with the ladies joining in – housework completed.

A bit breezy off the first tee, but who cares we were out and about.

Wayne Simpson and Brian Richards overpowered everyone with a 39 point total which beat Ian Walker and TK Moodley into second place courtesy of the count out… no preferential treatment for the club president.

Third came Mick Marriot without Spoekie, but in the company of Geoff Thommasen on 38,and for the second time this week no 2 clubs or hidden holes winners, only a few “nearlies”. With the ladies in contention they managed to get their names in the report, unfortunately it was Mo Jansen and Esme Hadley who were called up to lift the Stone, some gentlemanly members giving them assistance.

Then it was onto the rugby. A first win on South African soil for the Welsh so next week’s final test should be a humdinger. We have a “genny” so Eskom and its blackouts won’t spoil our watching. All locals are welcome to come down and attend, but get there early and get into the spirit(s).

On Wednesday it’s an Individual Stableford and on Saturday a 4 ball Alliance.

On Friday afternoon (15th) there will be a wake in the remembrance of Rupert Jones who passed away recently – all members are invited.

A note for the diary is Wednesday, July 20, the club will be having a quiz night with members and locals invited in teams of four.

Prizes for the brightest and the Stone will be put away for the night. The Club Championships will be played on the weekend of July 30 and July 31, the list is on the board and all members are invited to play.

Flyer’s footnote: The average player might make ten to twelve perfect shots in a good round-the rest are just good misses.
