Karate students excel at champs

Sensei Monya also congratulated students who competed with the 'heart of a lion'.

A number of students from Saiki Dojo in Ramsgate are to be congratulated on achieving their Japan Karate Association (JKA) colours and also on making the South African JKA team.

Sensei Monya Palmer said the colours and selections were well deserved and gave them praise for their hard work.

Results were as follows:
Leyat Admassu: Junior Novice Girls Yellow Belt – silver for kumite.
Iman Admassu: Junior Novice Girls Yellow Belt – gold for kata and silver for kumite.
Zak Wagner: Junior Novice Boys Orange Belt – silver for kumite.

Sensei Monya also congratulated the following students (mentioned below in their divisions), who although they did not win a medal, competed with the ‘heart of a lion’.
She said that even though they did not win a medal, they gained an experience to last them a lifetime, walking away with a smile on their face and a full heart.

Fekade Gebremariam: Veteran Novice Men White to Orange Belt 40+ Kata and Kumite.
Ethan Porter: Junior Novice Boys Green Belt 11 Kata and Kumite.
Reagan Volschenk: Junior Elite Men Brown/Black Belt 13 Kata and Kumite.

One of the highlights was provided by Micaela Palmer, who won the trophy for Young Adult Ladies Elite Kata U21.
She competed in the Young Adult Ladies Elite Black Belt 19/20 Kata and Kumite, where she won gold for kata and bronze for kumite.
In addition, she has achieved her South African JKA colours and been chosen for the SA JKA team yet again.
Her mom, Sensei Monya, was understandably very proud of her.
“Your excellence is testimony to years of dedication, discipline and hard work. No matter the challenges and difficulties faced, and no matter how high we set your goals, you achieved them all. You are a true champion.”
