Geezers take win at Sardine Run tournament

Prizes went way down the list with some teams not expecting a prize being surprised with a walk to the prize table.

What a wonderful week of golf as 33 teams of four battled it out to become the kings or queen sards for 2022.

The run committee put together a great tournament which was echoed by all the contestants and sponsors alike.

On Thursday, a weird and wonderful array of shirts, shorts and dress wear saw to the start of the fun-filled week, and the players came ready for just that.

The tournament started off with a friendly fourball Alliance to get the visitors used to the course which was in great condition after the recent rains. It was bitterly cold (for us locals) with the South Easter pitching up, but who cared – there was spirit on the course and also in the hip flask.

After day one the leaders in the clubhouse were The Hadedas with 84 points followed by the Wannabee Winners with 83 and the Umkomaas Whalers with 82 making up the first three.

Day two saw a change in format with a betterball Stableford and again a beautiful day for golf and the Nor’Easter came along and had a look in which made it doubly difficult for anyone to win the Suzuki that was on offer for the first hole-in-one on the fifth hole.

The Chokers made a move up the leaderboard by accumulating 79 points along with the Geezers on the same score with the Umko Whalers keeping abreast of things with 76. Therefore the leaderboard looked like this: in first place were the Hadedas with 160, followed by the Umko Whalers and the Germiston Gems both on 158 with Team Sards and the Geezers third equal on 156.

And so to the final day with a few headaches and tired swings after a Friday night special of music, dancing and fraternity with new and old time friends getting together. Those in contention kept a clear head and were determined to save their partying for Saturday night.

The format again was a betterballl Stableford with a change over of partners. At the end of the day Shaft Strokers and National Security were tied with 80 points each followed by the Village Eagles on 79, but the tournament is decided by an accumulation of all three days and it took a count out to decide the winners and it was the Geezers team of Zelda Menne, Leanne Parsons, Shaun Parsons and Steve Swain who were crowned kings and queens sards for 2022 with 235 points.

The unlucky team of the Umko Whalers were second with same score and National Security third with 231. Prizes went way down the list with some teams not expecting a prize being surprised with a walk to the prize table.

This year’s Sardine Run tournament was a great success and the committee must take a bow for all the hard work and exceptional effort they put in. Of course this would not have been possible without the fantastic support by the many sponsors including in no particular order that committed their time and effort in making this the success that it was and would have been doubly difficult without their input. Already the teams are enquiring about next year’s tournament and based on this year’s success there will be a surfeit of teams wanting to play.

For the locals, on Wednesday will be a betterball Stableford and Saturday will be our monthly medal. The list for the Club Championships will be on the board soon with all members expected to vie for their divisional trophy.

Flyer’s footnote: Hitting a golf ball correctly is the most sophisticated and complicated manoeuvre in sport, with the possible exception of eating a boerie roll at halfway without getting sauce down your shirt.
