It’s a fishing frenzy

Its really a fantastic time of the year.

Fishing has been productive in most fishing spots over the last two weeks. No guessing what’s on the bite? Yes it’s shad. Shad is one of South Africa’s most popular angling fish and they are pursued by hundreds of thousands of anglers every year.

Ian Logie said it was ‘happening’ with shad on the bite at most fishing spots from Hibberdene to Port Edward last weekend. The bag limit for shad is four per person per day. The closed season is October 1 to November 30. The minimum size limit is 30cm total length.

The sea has been friendly on most days and allowed the guys to launch or fish without too much hassle. The year has started off well for fishermen and women, let us hope it keeps on rolling and with colder weather, there is hope that the sardines will arrive within a few days.

It’s really a fantastic time of the year, weather and fishing wise. Other fish also making an appearance were garrick, kob, sharks and diamond stingray. Well done to the men and women.

Clayton Hugo caught the first garrick of the season at Margate pier last weekend. The bait used was a live shad with the new Okuma precision rod. It weighted about 6.4kg.

Ski Boat
Andre Saayman of Shelly Beach hooked a 7kg geelbek on Mighty Charters with skipper Dawid Redelinghuys last Thursday. Yes, the winter fish are here and very active even though the sea conditions were bad for two weeks but stabilising now. Can’t wait for the big ones to be landed with the tuna bonanza.

Sardines
On Monday this week reports of sardines indicated no silver fish as yet. However, there have been some reports of them being spotted in East London last Sunday, with gannets seen some 300m from the shore. Maybe this coming ‘long weekend’ there might be some good news.

Guys thanks for sending in those photos of your catch. Keep them coming in. Remember to send your catch of the day to sugann@dbn.caxton.co.za. Over and out tight lines.
