Shad on the bite

A good week as fishermen enjoyed catching shad.

Although there were huge sea swells over most days last week, shad was on the bite and some good sized fish were caught. Fishermen reported some good catches from Banana beach, Southport, The Block in Port Shepstone and at Margate Pier.

Fisherman Ian Logie caught a few blacktails. He is hoping that sea conditions improve this weekend.

Reports have also come in of bronze bream action for the past month. These fish can be caught with light tackle.

For bream fishing one’s trace needs to be a bit longer than usual to provide a bit of movement, and a round, orange float is needed. This float attracts the bream and allows them to hone in on the bait from far away.

One of the best tips for catching bronze bream is to make fairly large prawn bait as bulkier baits produce a quicker and harder bite.

Stumpies have been keeping the guys on the beaches busy, while the gully hoppers have been having great success with bronze bream.

Both of these fish favour prawn bait but each prefers a different rig. The stumpies require good water reading as an accurate cast is necessary to get the bite. Place your bait on the edge of a sandbank or in some working water to get a bite.
