Hooked on fishing: Not much to bite about

Fishing should be good this weekend.

We all have been there. You get ready for a perfect day of fishing at the weekend as weekdays are work days, so you look forward to a great weekend, but come Friday afternoon the weather changes. It’s either raining, cold or windy not suitable for saltwater fishing.

This past weekend was not good for fishing, but some braved the rain and cold and caught some bronze bream at various spots including Ramsgate, Umbango and Umtentweni.

Fishing along the Mzimkhulu River was also not bad with perch and mullets caught. Fisherman, Ian Logie said fishing along the Mzimkhulu was not good as the river came down. “A few fish were caught but nothing good to report on,” he said.

Fishing guru Steven Moodley said if the weather is good without any swirls at sea, it should be a great for fishing this weekend. “Most fishermen are awaiting the sardines and we are hoping within the next few weeks the shiny fish will be here,” he said.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board conducted a sardine observation flight into the Eastern Cape, last Thursday. The team spotted in excess of 15 shoals of sardines all accompanied by dolphin at Rame Head. This activity continued off Hluleka where there were scattered pockets, as well as two very large shoals of sardines with shark activity.

The next flight to the East London is scheduled for today (26th). As this Sunday (29th) is a new moon, so fishing could be good. Remember to forward your catch or fishing photos and news to sugann@dbn.caxton.co.za.
