Phiwa Mkhoma bags title number four at Port Shepstone Country Club

The past champion held off a late charge from the defending champion.

Phiwa Mkhoma claimed the Port Shepstone Country Club strokeplay title for the fourth time in a tight finish against defending champion James Coull last weekend.

Although James will be pursuing the PGA route, he was permitted to play in the champs but will lose his amateur status fairly soon.

The tournament saw many Coastal members tee it up and there was quite a buzz over the two days.

A talking point was the opening of the new third green, further up the slope, making it a much more difficult hole.

Phiwa shot 75 and 73, while James had 76 and 74, closing with a back nine of 34.

James thus won the A division, with Phiwa as the overall champion.

Gerry Terblanche provided much of the flair, with his exciting if occasionally erratic game, finishing runner-up in the A division on 160.

George Bothma placed third on 151 and was also the best senior golfer (over 50). He also won best nett on 145.

Nkazimulo Nqoko won the B division on 166, with Andries Brewis runner-up on 173.

Sheldon van der Merwe took top honours in the C division on 69 points with Matthew Vermeulen next on 67 points.

Cameron Olivant won the junior section on 89 and 84, scores he’d rather forget!
