New Village Eagles members ‘make a clean sweep’

The Bald Eagle is not sure why so many balls would find their way into dams and bushes because there was no excuse for wayward golf.

They say that records are there to be broken. Well, the Village Eagles certainly took that saying to heart for their monthly game at Selborne Golf Estate.

Each time that the Village Eagles have their game the players are asked to estimate how many balls will be lost on the day.

The tiles of best male golfer and lady golfer went to Roy Brown and Pippa Bruce.

When Brian Kidd estimated 184 he got a few laughs and jeers, but that all changed when he collected his prize for being the closest to the actual 180 balls that were lost. These 180 balls never to be found means a record is broken.

The course itself was in pristine condition and the weather was perfect. Mind you, I should have known something was wrong when a nervous buck came out of the bush wearing a crash helmet.

As usual we were treated like royalty at Selborne so a big thanks to the management and staff who looked after us.

Even a resident, who must reside close to the water that is on the right side of the 16th fairway, was kind enough to use his ball retriever to retrieve some balls that had ended up in said water.

If it is true that a new broom sweeps clean, then this month we can change that to read ‘new members make a clean sweep’.

The winners on the day who were on the right side of the count out on 87 points were new members Norman and Sarie Hall ably assisted by Roy Brown and Steve Oliver. Welcome Norman and Sarie.

The best male golfer on the day was Roy Brown with 42 individual points and the best lady golfer was Pippa Bruce on 37 points.

The Stone Trophy was collected by Kas van de Merwe, Nigel Henson, Dave Geils and Ian McKenzie.

We look forward to our next game at Umkomaas on the first Tuesday of May. See you all there.
