Every dog has its day, but some make history

The society enjoys exploring South African heritage and Barbara plans historical field trips for the members.

The Southern KZN History Society gathered at the Uvongo Tennis Club last Saturday where they enjoyed a presentation by Sue Farrell on the history of the domesticated dog.

Sue also highlighted those brave animals which received the PDSA Dickin Medal in the first and second world wars for bravery under fire; this is considered the animal kingdom’s version of the Victoria Cross.

Mary Neethling was the long standing chairman of the society until Covid placed a hold on public gatherings. Mary stood down in 2020, after which, Barbara Biggar filled the position.

In the past they have visited the fossil site at the Wild Coast Sun, old mission stations such as Marion Hill in Pinetown and Mariazell Mission, 47 kilometres from Matatiele, which was built in the 1800s.

Other places of interest have been, Botha House, Pennington, and the Killie Campbell Museum where the Campbell Collections are housed in a neo-Cape Dutch style house.

During May, the society plans to revisit Botha House in Pennington.
