Southerns in batting spin

Sanolin Pather brought the game back with a fine spell of bowling, returning figures of 4 for 33.

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal cricket team hosted the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) team in a Castle Premier League 50 over encounter at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday.

Winning the toss, UKZN opted to bat on a difficult wicket and got off to a flying start with former South Coaster Chad Laycock and Aryan Goplalan scoring 34 and 53 runs respectively.

Sanolin Pather brought the game back with a fine spell of bowling, returning figures of 4 for 33.

UKZN finished on 164 all out, with other notable bowling performances from Gareth Pieterse (2 for 13) and Alveiro Nadasen (2 for 32).

The target of 165 for SKZN was in reach at 50 for 1, but a batting collapse left the hosts well short of the target and finally bowled out for 88.

Sachin Kalkapersad top-scored with 19, but the hosts could only feel disappointed in losing the game and dropping valuable log points.

UKZN top bowlers were Samkelo Gasa (2 for 22) and Daelen Fynn (3 for 26).

SKZN now hosts one of the province’s top teams, Clares, at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday.

The local team is now seventh out of 13 teams, after four games.

* In the local domestic T20 league two fixtures were played last weekend.

In reply, Sezela could only manage 78 all out, with Rowan Schoeman taking six wickets.

Mike Lombard made almost half of Sezela’s runs, 38.

In the second game, Knockouts beat Wolfpack by five wickets in a highly entertaining game.

Wolfpack batted first, scoring 122 with Brandon Naidoo (34) and Nathaniel Govender (28) showing some form.

Best bowler for Knockouts was Ayaz Patel with four wickets.

Despite some good bowling by Preston Govender (2 for 17), the star of the show was Hamza Dhudat, who scored 46 runs to give Knockouts the win.
