Karateka bring home medals

Giancarlo Ferranti obtained two gold medals, one in the 7/9 kata category and one in the 8/9 years kumite division.

A group of young up-and-coming karateka from the Ugu region recently represented Kwazulu-Natal at the Karate South Africa (KSA) National Development Tournament and Women’s Cup in Tongaat.

The two tournaments showcased developing athletes in the country, from white to purple belts, and the Woman’s Cup represented all women in karate within South Africa.

Giancarlo Ferranti obtained two gold medals, one in the 7/9 kata category and one in the 8/9 years kumite division.

Jayden Oosthuizen’s efforts were enough to see him bag silver medals in both the 10 and 11 kata category as well as the 10 and 11 boys kumite under 40kg category.

Christiaan Potgieter also won himself a silver medal in 12 and 13 kumite above 55kg category.

There were also a few bronze medals won by Richi Swanepoel, who earned a third place finish and a bronze medal in boys cadet 14 and 15 kumite division.

Brigitta Thaumuller also received a bronze medal in both the girls cadet 14 and 15 kata and kumite divisions.

Taylor Selkon represented the district and province in the Women’s Cup, finishing third to obtain a bronze medal in the 16 and 17 kata category.

Ugu charmain, Sensei Coenie Vrey expressed how pleased he was pleased with the results and the hard work of all the karateka who participated in the tournament.
