Fond memories shared… now for club champs at Umkomaas GC

The competition is sure to be fierce, but friendly.

Sixty-eight players, including Umkomaas Golf Club members, Natal Nomads, Southern Natal Nomads, and other golfing friends, enjoyed excellent weather and course conditions last Wednesday in celebration of the life of Derek Airey.

The Derek Airey Memorial Day was superbly organised by Eric Morsner, in line with Derek’s last wishes and included many prizes, donated, and previously won by Derek.

Competition winners were Harold Horsley and Graham Coxell on 47 points, second place to Dave Mulroy and Jacques Kirstein on 46 points, and husband and wife team Russel and Evija McKelvey on 45 points took third place.

Scores were very good due to the perfect conditions and there were a host of count-outs on 44 points who all enjoyed Derek’s generosity of prizes.

Derek, who died in June this year, willed R25 000 to the club as a token of his appreciation of his many years of happy membership and drinks and snacks were also provided.

The eulogies by UGC captain, Nomads captains and friends and family of Derek’s were all very positive, just as Derek always was even when he was so very unwell near the end of his time.

Family and close friends went up to the 14th tee to spread Derek’s ashes as this was, according to his wishes, where he wanted to be forever.

Derek has thus joined several past members who are ever-present on the 14th tee.

All in all, it was an excellent day and a fitting tribute to one of our club’s real stalwarts. He will be missed.

* The Blue Tee Wednesday competition, which has run over several months, came to an end this last week with overall honours going to Francois Rossouw on 145 points.

Harold Horsley, on 142 points, scooped second place and Sue Boucher third on 137 points.

Thanks again to Nelson Moonsamy for his tireless efforts in organising these great competitions.

The ninth edition of the Alliance League was played on Saturday with several stalwart teams braving the rainy weather.

First place on 88 points were the Tri Champs (Sutcliffe, Naidoo, Sheepershad, Rossouw) with the Umkomaasters (Taylor, Kirstein, Moonsamy, Reddy) a few points behind on 84.

Prizes for accuracy – nearest the pins – were awarded to Robbie Matthias (4th), Jacques Kirstein (9th), Harold Horsley (13th) and Kuben Naidoo (17th).

Another of our rising stars was in the prizes this past week.

Damien O’Connell with his prizes.

Damien O’Connell scooped the A and B division best nett during the KZN Foundation tournament played at Royal Durban last week.

Hearty congratulations to members Sabiha and Jacques Hulley on their marriage this past weekend.

The many messages of congratulations and well wishes are a testament to the joy we all feel that you got your happily ever after.
