Scottburgh GC golfers mourn two stalwarts… and welcome Mikhail

During the lockdown the club unfortunately lost members Reg Daniel and Selva Govender.

We’re back! It’s been a long layoff but he good news is that Mikhail van Brakel is taking over the pro shop to run on his own.

It won’t affect his amateur status and he will still be available to play league for Southern KwaZulu-Natal.

The sad news is that during the lockdown we unfortunately lost two members (that I’m aware of), namely Reg Daniel and Selva Govender.

Reg was a long-serving member and past captain who in his last few years was not in the best of health mainly due to diabetes. His death came just a few weeks after that of his brother, Keith.

Selva was also a long-serving member who unfortunately contracted the virus. He then developed pneumonia which caused his death. The condolences of the committee and members go out to both families.

During lockdown some of the members got together and did some tidying up of the course, trimming trees and getting rid of some of the invasive species.

Special thanks go to the ‘Chainsaw Twins’ Pete Gilliver and Russel Freeman.

The course is in terrific condition and greenkeeper Graham Brown’s hard work is well appreciated by members and visitors alike.

Now for some rain

The first monthly medal post lockdown was won by Hans Beuthe on 45 points in the C division. He shot 86 to return a nett 60.

In the A division Barry ‘Consistent’ Kisten had the best gross score with 76 and Bob Hall had the best nett with 68.

In the B division Hilton McAuliffe must have thought he’d creamed it with a gross 77 (nett 63) but ‘no dice’ and John Mills had the best nett with 68.

Gary Jones was the runner-up in the C division with a nett 75.

Windy Wednesday was played as a betterball Stableford and in form Bob Hall along with Mike Hogan claimed first place with 43 points, Bob shooting a remarkable 77.

Graham Brown and Rupert Jones were runners-up with 40.

The Stone of Scottburgh has been cleaned and polished and was presented to Pete Gilliver and the Flyer, both paying the customary fine

.Becoming a favourite (for some) we played a combined Stableford on Saturday with a hidden partner who was drawn after the game.

Geoff Thommasen drew Anton Visage – or was it the other way round? – to win with 64, beating the in form captain Bob Hall and Graham Brown by one on 63.

Once again the Flyer had to hoist the Stone, this time with Russel Lawson along with Gareth Walker and Mike Bremner.

No count out for this ignominious feat.

The kitchen has also been privatised with Deane Jooste, Corlane Lewis and Trudie Engelbrecht taking over.

The clubhouse restaurant is open to all. Members qualify for a five percent discount on all meals.

Flyer’s footnote: Golf is a funny game, it’s done more for the good health of people and at the same time has sometimes robbed them of their peace of mind.
