Selborne almost derails Southbroom’s league charge

Looking ahead, Selborne Park, Umdoni Park and Umkomaas GC will host the annual KZN Interclub tournament from October 25 to 27.

THE final round of the Southern KwaZulu-Natal handicap golf league was held at Selborne Park Golf Club last Sunday, where the hosts made eventual champions Southbroom Golf Club work a whole lot harder than they would have liked or necessarily anticipated.

The final score was 6-6, a major improvement for Selborne after struggling to field a team earlier in the season.

It was great to see from Selborne and if they keep it up next year they could become contenders for the title.

Southbroom had to call on its major gun, Gavin Sole, who filled in when a few other regulars were unavailable for whatever reason.

Foursomes were shared two apiece.

Julius Dlamini and Gareth Parsons (taking a day off from the waves) lost to Southbroom’s skipper Don Osbourn and Paul Lawson.

Tim McGregor and Bram Stiglingh beat George Bothma and Graham Sole 3/1 to square things.

John Ridl and Adrian van Vuuren hammered Kevin Murray and Cyprian Xolo 5/3.

Darryl Herman and Jacques Kruger lost 1-down to Gavin Sole and Gary Purtell.

In the singles, Parsons lost to Osbourn 1-down, Dlamini beat Lawson 4/3, Sole junior beat Stiglingh 5/4, McGregor beat Bothma 2/1, Ridl beat Murray 5/3, Van Vuuren beat Xolo 4/2, Herman lost to Purtell 5/3, Kruger lost to Sole 5/4.

The end result was a 6-6 half, but it was enough for Southbroom to win the trophy.

Looking ahead, Selborne Park, Umdoni Park and Umkomaas GC will host the annual KZN Interclub tournament from October 25 to 27.

LOG: Southbroom 3,5; Port Shepstone 2,5; Umdoni Park 2; Margate 1,5; Selborne Park 0,5.
