Strong start for Warriors

Things are going well for the local rugby club.

The Riversmead South Coast Warriors travelled to Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg to face Drakensberg Rugby Club, which has amalgamated with Voortrekker Old Boys Rugby Club and joined the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union first division.

The second team lost 55-5 to Voortrekker, showing tremendous courage in the second half, letting in only two tries and scoring one.

Men of the match were Dylano Gilden (forwards) and Curtley Jones (backs).

The first team took on newcomers Drakensberg, who came out firing, scoring an early try and two penalties.

However, the Warriors defence remained solid, and soon turned to attack, with the visitors eventually winning 24-11.

Tries were scored by Cameron Camp, Duan Potgieter, Lunga Madladla and Lourens Stapelberg with two conversions by Westley Nyman.

Camp (forwards) and Devan van Eeden (backline) where named players of the match.

The Warriors U20s took on Crusaders at Douglas Mitchell sport grounds last Thursday evening in the Frank Norris Premier Division.

The visitors were welcomed by a barrage of attacking play from the inform U20s. The hosts ran in four unanswered tries in the first half.

But Crusaders came out firing in the second half, scoring a couple of tries before the Warriors found their straps again, scoring two more of their own to win the game 40-20

Tries were scored by Curtly Deysel (2), Erich Rediker, Daniel Celliers, Marko Kotze and Oros Ndlazi.

Gunther van der Merwe converted five of the tries.

Warriors Rugby club thanked sponsors, namely Riversmead Farms, Status Panel Beaters, Maser Security and Kencrete.

It’s back to Pietermaritzburg for the Warriors firsts and second this Thursday night, for away games against Pmb Collegians.

The Warriors have now won their first three league games, having beaten Jaguars 45-5, Mets 65-5 and now Drakensberg 24-11.

* The Warriors mini rugby boys kicked off their season in Pietermaritzburg last Sunday.

The U0 boys played two games, against Crusaders and Hillcrest rugby clubs respectively, losing 5-3 in their first game and 6-0 in their second game.

The U11 boys, now playing 15 man rugby on a full 100m field, played against Queensburgh rugby club and really played well, winning 29-0.

Next tournament will be in Durban on April 28. All children are welcome to join.
