Track Torque: Vettel and the ‘lady in red’

There was much fanfare at the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday.

AS usual for Monte Carlo, there was a great sense of occasion, pride and polish… and Ferrari’s prancing horses were the pride of the principality last Sunday.

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen fitted in perfectly for a one-two finish.

Vettel was alive with energy and enthusiasm and, after Raikkonen’s first stop when in the lead, Vettel unleashed himself and his Red Horse, bravely attacking the challenge of the tight, short and narrow Monaco track.

This allowed him to stay in the lead after his pit stop and he raced on relentlessly to the chequered flag with Raikkonen just three seconds behind him at the finish.

In a surprising third spot after another great drive was Daniel Ricciardo in his hard-charging Red Bull Renault.

Off the podium in 4th position was the first of the battle weary Mercedes cars in Valtteri Bottas.

Lewis Hamilton, in the second car, and who started out 13th on the grid, finished seventh.

Their long-wheel based cars were not suited to the short tight Monaco track and both drivers battled to get the tyres to warm up quickly.

After Bottas came a disappointed Max Verstappen.

Like Raikkonen, he felt that he should have been ahead of his teammates and that the early stop he made was a mistake.

Carlos Sainz filled the gap in sixth position after another well-driven race.

Romain Grosjean in the Haas, Felipe Massa in the Williams and Kevin Magnussen were eight, ninth and 10th.

Monaco again proved to be almost impossible to overtake, perhaps even worse with the new wider cars but it is still a wonderful test of bravery and skill for the driver and endurance for the cars.

Vettel is now 25 points ahead of Hamilton as we move across the Atlantic to Canada for the next event in two weeks’ time.

It was Vettel’s 45th grand prix win and Ferrari’s first 1-2 since Germany in 2010.

It was nice to see Princess Charlene (Wittstock) with the Prince of Monte Carlo. Her beautiful red dress complemented Ferrari’s achievement.
