Bell bowlers clinch mixed fours title

The quality of the bowls was quite outstanding, helped by some decent weather for a change.

KINGFISHER BOWLING ASSOCIATION

FRIENDLY weather resulted in some outstanding bowls being played in the finals of the recent mixed fours tournament.

In particular, the final between The Bell and Margate BC was one of the best games seen for a long time.

Unfortunately there could be only one winner and the honours, after a nail-biting finish, went to The Bell’s Barry Delvin, Daphne Sapsford, Leon Sander and Mada Lindeque.

Worthy runners-up were Margate BC’s Gerry Davey, Franci Philpott, with Derek and Georgie McKechnie.

In joint third position were Maureen and Wayne Muller, with Geoff and Tina Barbour from The Bell, together with Hibberdene’s Wayne van Nikkelen-Kuyper, Gloria Gerrard, with Arthur and Miriam Seagar.

Entry forms for the men’s and women’s pairs on June 10 have been sent out so get your entries in.

In the meantime, enjoy the break from KBA competitions, with only the midweek league being played at the moment.

The next KBA council meeting is at Margate BC on Monday, April 24 at 9.30am.

Bowlers are wished best of luck and good weather for the upcoming MCC Challenge, Margate Week, Nationals and Hibiscus Week.

In other news, the novice singles were played recently.

The women’s champion was Nikita Coetzer from Port Shepstone Country Club, who is only 21 years old.

Runner-up was Sezela’s Penny Ridgway. In joint third place were Nora Swart from Hibberdene and Barbara Henderson from AMBC.

The men’s champion was Ferro van Greunen from Southbroom and runner-up was Trevor Main from Umtentweni.

In joint third were Umtentweni’s Peter Giblin and Margate’s Ron Vink.

BANNERS REST

RAIN once again resulted in the cancellation of the GP Security mixed pairs last Friday.

A good time was had by all at the well-supported HELP Foundation fund-raiser last Sunday, with Steve Rennie and team taking the honours.

Due to KBA mid-week league, the SuperSpar Port Edward two-bowl mixed trips has moved from Wednesday, April 12 to Thursday, April 20.

Next sponsored competition is the Golden Moon Spur mixed trips next Wednesday (19th).

The Bell bowlers (from left) Daphne Sapsford, Barry Delvin, Leon Sander and Mada Lindeque clinched an exciting final over Margate BC’s team in the Kingfisher Bowling Association’s mixed fours final.

HIBBERDENE

THE nominated mixed trips played last Friday were won by Eddie Milne and John and Judy Hové.

Second were Arthur Seager with Desiré and Ryno van den Berg. Session prize was won by Marie Coetzer, Gloria Gerrard and Fay Patterson.

Next tournament is the Hibberdene Pharmacy mixed trips this Friday (14th).

Last Saturday the club played host to the KBA mixed fours. Eight teams played three games of 15 ends with some good results.

Once again the bar service, green fees and catering were excellent. Section three was won by the Margate team and section six by AMBC.

MARGATE BC

ALL members note that a Special General Meeting will be held at the club on Thursday, April 20 a 5pm.

Congratulations to Gerry Davey, Franci Philpott, Derek McKechnie and Georgie McKechnie for reaching the finals of the KBA mixed fours competition.

Well done to Ron Vink for achieving a bronze medal in the KBA novices singles championships.The annual Margate Week Bowls tournament will be held from Monday, May 1 to Friday, May 5.

Winners of the Food Lover’s Market on March 30 were Derek McKechnie, Yvonne Bausek and Margret Duffield.

Quiz night and supper is on April 19 at 6.30pm. Cost is R60 pp.

Easter Bunny fun day this Sunday (16th) from 9am. Lots and lots of prizes for everyone. All welcome.

MUNSTER

HIGH Rock Pub and Grill winners were Tommie and Louise Dry, from runners-up Jimmy and Ann MacAlister.

Easter Chicken Run this Monday (17th) at 2pm for 2.30pm. R10 green fees, casual clothes, wear an Easter bonnet/cap, prizes for the best dressed.

All welcome, bowls followed by a bring and braai.

Tabs-in every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1.30pm for 2pm.

PORT EDWARD

THE winners of the Indulgence Beauty Salon open trips last week were Peter Ziervogel, Leigh Warner and Sariena Ziervogel, from Elbè and George Snyman with Phillipa Rowney followed by Rod Phelps, Janet Venter and Mary Phelps. Board winner was Val Smith.

Remember ‘Roll a Bowl’ this Friday (14th) before sundowners at 4pm.

Correction for the Payn business day – the winning team was from John Deere in Kokstad, namely Gary Wells, Dean Wicks, Ashley Keal and Mackie Swart. Peter Brereton’s team took second place.

PORT SHEPSTONE

BIG news this week is that the club has a new KBA champion in Nikki Coetzer, who at the tender age of 21 is the new KBA women’s novice champion.

Congratulations and Celebrations. It’s two in a row for the club as last year Julie Ross won the title.

The South Coast Herald mixed fours were won by Eddie Fann, Howard Frizelle, John Nadauld and Elena Frizelle.

Runners-up were Leon Saunders, Michelle Vermeulen, Peter and Annemarie Giblin. Next one is on May 11.

SOUTHPORT

THE South Coast Herald 2-4-2 is due to be played today (13th) and the popular Suzuki men’s trips next Thursday (20th).

Meanwhile the club will progress with the singles club championships during the week.

The announced winter ‘tabs in’ starting time of 1pm for 1.30pm will only be applicable from May 1.

THE BELL

CONGRATULATIONS to Barry Delvin, Leon Sander, Daphne Sapsford and Mada Lindeque on winning the KBA mixed pairs competition.

Well played also to Maureen and Wayne Muller with Tina and Geoff Barbour who achieved joint third place.

Winners of the Captain’s Anchor mixed fours were Daphne Sapsford, Barbara Gradwell, Mada Lindeque and Val Boshoff.

Runners-up were Sandy and Stan Penny with Leon Sander and Gary le Brasse.

Second session winners were Renzo van Niekerk, Hew Hodgson, Ethne Holding and Margaret Douglas.

TWENI

WELL done to Trevor Main for winning silver and Peter Giblin bronze in the KBA novice singles.

Well done also to Peter and Gerda Clark, Astrid Jackson and Tony Aveyard who won their section in the KBA mixed fours.

South Coast Herald sponsored men’s pairs was won on a count out by Barry Delvin and Geoff Barbour from Steve Doran and Tony Aveyard, with the session prize going to Tom Semple and Derick Celliers.

VILLAGE

WINNERS of the Hibiscus Retirement Villages men’s trips were Alan Tyers, Clive Bignell and Bill Parfitt, followed by Steve Rennie, Aubrey Hood and John Keppler.

Sessions went to Barry Christie, Norman Isherwood and Brent Addison and to Graham Gold, Ralph Burls and Mike Prinsloo on a count out. John Sutton won the 50/50.

Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 is on Thursday (20th).

Bring and braai next Friday (21st) and the in-house Hyundai drawn mixed trips is on Saturday, April 22.
