Radical comp planned for Margate CC

The Carreira-Curlewis Cup is set to tee off on January 5.

LOUIE Carreira is a guy who is passionate about the game of golf.

He also loves his home club, Margate Country Club.

But he’s worried about the (global) dip in the game, yet doesn’t feel that needs to happen at Margate CC.

So he’s come up with an interesting concept.

“Let’s change Margate golf, or, for that matter, South African golf for ever. I want to do that, but I can’t. But we can!” he says.

He feels the average golfer just wants good value for his money, playing his weekly one or two rounds of golf.

Clubs all over the world are battling to find a middle point of making money and giving the golfer a good day out.

“I am tired of hearing or seeing winners receive R300 for winning a competition but the day out cost him or her at least R500, second prize R200 and third prize R100, or winning three balls,” he lamented.

Understandably, from the club’s side it is not easy.

He has proposed a business opportunity where the person or company sponsoring will get advertising, or call it mileage, with banners and posters around the club, coverage in the media and a tee box all to ‘dress up’ every week, throughout the year, plus more.

“People in the town will know who you are, never mind the holidaymakers. We will change golf on the coast forever,” he said.

The plan is to make the prize money seriously tantalising – R1 000 for first place, R500 for second place and R300 for third place, individual Stableford format.

Prizes will be given in the form of vouchers from the companies involved in this way ensuring the money comes back to the company.

Thursday’s competitions will be called the Carreira-Curlewis Cup.

Each weekly winner for 50 weeks will qualify for the year-end competition, which will see 50 players trying to win a grand prize.

Sundays will be a time for families, when the cost will be only R60 for nine holes.

There’ll be good music, great food, and a fun putt-putt type competition.

The first competition will take place on Thursday, January 5.
