Mavundla ‘baked’ in six hole playoff

There was certainly a buzz as the playoff went on and on.

SEAN Baker won Margate Country Club’s strokeplay title last Sunday, beating Patrick Mavundla in a marathon six hole sudden-death playoff.

Baker carded 74 and 75, while Mavundla had rounds of 72 and 77.

Mavundla nearly won it on the 36th hole, missing a 12 foot birdie putt after Baker had taken two shots to get out of the bunker and made a bogey.

So close: Patrick Mavundla’s putt to win the trophy in regulation play slides past the edge.

Veteran Ivan Curlewis was in the final three-ball on the Sunday, but fell a little off the pace on the back nine to finish three behind, tied with Victor Mbhele.

Robert Mavundla was alone in third on 151.

The B division was also decided in a playoff, with Jim Finn trumping John Webster on the first extra hole (the 16th), his sneaky tactic of putting out of the bunker reaping dividends.

Jim and John both carded 161, with both having 76 on Sunday. That’s some golf.

Interesting tactic: Jim Finn gets the ball out of the sand using his putter. At first spectators thought he was making a mistake, but when it ended a few feet from the hole, his decision was justified. Looking on his opponent John Webster.

Pierre Malherbe won the C division on 78 points, counting out Brian Jeffreys.

Saturday prizes went to Ivan Curlewis (A div on nett 69), Charlie Hartmann (B div on nett 65) and Angus McLachlan (C div on 36 points).

Sunday prizes went to Robin Shuttleworth (A div on nett 72), Fanie Terblanche (B div on nett 68) and David Jenkinson (C div on 38 points).

The previous Tuesday’s game saw the women’s Vice Captain’s team beat the Captain’s team by one point, 218 to 217.

Best score of 80 points was returned by Lizzie Meyer, Lynn Meek and Beryl Williamson.

The previous Thursday’s comp was won by Jim Finn and Piet Ludick on 50 points.

Well played: Sandi Johnston (right) is Margate CC’s women’s champion for 2016. She is congratulated by vice-captain Lesley Erasmus (left) and captain Joan Minnaar.

Sandi Johnston won the women’s championship on 194 gross, one ahead of Maureen Ogilvie.

Copper division was won by Alicia Hilt on 206, five ahead of Lexley Lewis.

Saturday nett went to Jane Davies on 78, one ahead of Wondra Bothma on nett 79.

Sunday nett winner was Beryl Williamson on nett 68, five clear of Connie McArthur on nett 73.

Overall nett winner was Evelyn Burls, followed by Alicia Hilt.

Ladies Classic for Southbroom

SOUTHBROOM Golf Club is preparing to host the hugely popular Southbroom Ladies Amateur Classic, which will take place from May 8 to 10.

Around 128 women are expected to play, travelling from all around the country to be part of the fun and games.

In regular golf, Gary Purtell and Gavin Sole won the betterball Stableford at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday, scoring 46 points to win by two from Dave Page and Garth Strong, as well as Geoff Skelton and Vic Pretorius.

The women headed for the clubhouse when the rain came down.

The previous Wednesday’s competition saw Jean Corfe, Mary Carolan, Geraldine Treherne and Jeanne Powell win on 93 points.

In second place on 90 points were Helen Strong, Ruth Mosburger, Helen Proctor and Candida Amm.

The men’s alliance was won by George Haswell, Colin Steyn, Geoff Skelton and Richard Derman on 102 points.

Way behind on 94 points were Dries Barkhuizen, Nic van Deventer, Dix Vorster and Malcolm Greenland, followed on 93 points by Dave Chambers, Hendry Kotze, Vic Pretorius and Brian Brasher.

Boetie on form at Sheppie

BOETIE Thompson and Doug Shepherd won the betterball at Port Shepstone CC last Wednesday, carding 49 points and counting out Brett Pollington and Kevin Loring.

In third place were Gavin van Wyk and Leon Reeders on 48 points.

Saturday’s competition was won by Bonita Roos on 35 points, on a countout from Ken Marshall and Boetie Thompson.

Monthly mug takes place this Saturday.

The recent Ladies Open Day, sponsored by Dr Darryl and Amy D’Arcy, attracted 85 golfers.

Winners were Annie Stoppel and Cecelia Verster, followed by Rene Matthew and Michelle Davies.

All to play for at San Lameer

THE 72 hole KwaZulu-Natal Open Strokeplay will tee off at San Lameer Country Club this Friday.

It sees the cream of South African amateur golf on display, but of the 174 expected players only 29 (by my counting and at the time of writing) were from KwaZulu-Natal.

The tournament hasn’t had a ‘local’ winner for quite a few years now, but there is a crop of youngsters who could change that.

It will also be very interesting to see who does what in terms of Kzn order of merit points and rankings.
