Wayne’s World: Mzobe shows his class

The local runners and walkers had a tough, but fun day in the sun.

THE Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast marathon was held in trying conditions with strong headwinds and high temperatures in Amanzimtoti last Sunday.

Local hero Michael Mzobe produced another scintillating performance in the marathon.

His time of two hours and 37 minutes propelled him to third place overall. This was a massive achievement considering that it was only his second 42km marathon.

In the 21km event, Sarah Morrison-Young was the first junior girl over the line in the running event, while Hannes Streudert and Moira King were the first in the men’s and women’s walking races in their respective age categories.

Steady: Jabulani Khwela puts in a decent effort at the Goss and Balfe marathon.

Moira was also the overall women’s winner.

The field comprised about 2000 athletes, including 59 from South Coast Striders.

Although the course was very demanding, the carnival atmosphere at the finish more than made up for the aches and pains.

* Don’t forget the weekly running time trials of 4km or 8km which take place at the club in Edward Avenue, Uvongo every Wednesday evening at 5.30pm.
