Roel breaks his age

AGE is but a number as Southbroom Golf Club veteran Roel Germs proved last Wednesday, when he broke his age by three shots, shooting 81.

He and George Haswell unsurprisingly won the comp on 51 points, with Lance Marshall and Roy Deakins in second place on 49 points.

In third were Dries Barkhuizen and Patrick Mavundla on 48 points, tied with Barclay Shearer and Gerald Fitzgerald.

Mike Jacquet had an eagle two at the 7th.

Meanwhile, the women played for the Mary Thomson Memorial Goblet Espirit de Corps. It was won by Rene Matthew on 41 points.

Mary was a long-standing member (and employee) of the club. She personified the common spirit and loyalty that exists between the women members at the club, hence the naming of the trophy Espirit de Corps.

The monthly Union Motors open day last Friday was won by John Fourie, Frank Carr, Roy Watkins and Pat McCormack, beating Shaun Nathanson, David Higgins, Kevin Bourhill and David Smythe in the play-off.

Having to settle for third were Guy Yeadon, Bob Wagner, Ben Pillay and Raj Naidoo.

Nearest the pins were Ruth Mosburger (4th – hole in one!), Ryan Charlton/Melissa Eaton (8th), Rene Matthew (11th), Wayne Molyneaux (14th) and Fred van Zyl (15th).

Arthur Lee was the 2014 winner of the Captain’s Trophy, carding a nett 66 last Saturday. Bob Thomas won the regular comp, also on nett 66, but did not qualify for the Captain’s Trophy.

Les Civin and Chris Miller had nett 69.

The Stableford section was won on 42 points by Bruce Matthew, followed by Hans Rose and Joe Carolan on 40 points.

The women’s silver section was won by Rene Matthew on nett 73, with Mary Carolan and Jenny Westray on nett 74.

Candida Amm won the bronze section on nett 69, on a countout from Sandy Luus and Jeanette Peyios.

Hilary and Margaret win

THE women’s Connie Day competition at Margate Country Club was won by Hilary Hendry and Margaret Ford on 45 points.

They counted out Wondra Bothma and Lynn Meek. In third place were Agnes Speilmann and Beryl Williamson on 44 points.

The Wobblers’ alliance last Wednesday was won by Jim Finn, Brian Jeffreys and Hans Beilhartz on 97 points.

In second place were Andy Buchan, Tony Comte and Ken Norval on 95 points, followed by Rod O’Farrell, Otto Mutschler and Brian Henning on 90 points.

The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Tony Peace, Rob McGill and Dieter Berend on 68 points.

Thursday’s pro shop comp saw Arthur Ehlert card nett 66 and win on a countout from Sandi Johnston and Edwin Steyn.

Angus McLachlan was next on nett 67.

Nearest the pins: Arthur Ehlert (2nd), Patrick Mavundla (16th).

Saturday’s comp was won by Alan Davies and John Ford on 73 points, three ahead of Derek Egerton and Doug Johnston. In third place were Jim Finn and Keith Duncalf on 69 points.

PETE Stoppel carded an astonishing +8 to win at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday.

Greg Hornby had +7 and Kevin Loring +4.

The Saturday Wozani Berg Christmas fund-raiser saw pro Jesse Verster win on 41 points, counting out Peppy Govender and Dave Mee.

The Beekman Classic this Saturday is just about fully booked, but there may be a spot or two for late entries.
