Gail and ‘Swift’ take top honours

South Coast dogs were the only 'Toy entries' and were rather dwarfed among the Danes, boxers, retrievers, whippets and Staffies.

SOUTH Coast dogs recently took part in the ‘Boxer and German Shepherd Dog Club’s Championship’ shows held at Woodlands Sports Club in Durban. Out of towner Gawie Faul from the Free State judged both the agility and dog jumping over the championship weekend and Ninette Smith and Nicky Aarndgaard also came out to judge dog jumping and agility respectively.

Most handlers found the courses rather tough and plenty of disqualifications proved to be the order of the day. Special mention must go to Gail Taylor and Swift, who must have had the round of the weekend in dog jumping on the Saturday, earning her first place with her last championship certificate (required in order to make Swift up as a dog jumping champion). To make a dog a champion you have to earn three championship certificates under three different judges, which is not easy as there generally are lots of dogs. You have to have a clear round (no faults in an allowed time) and all dogs that run clear in the first round have to go into a jump-off. The fastest dog with a clear or the least amount of faults wins.
